Common Queries about RAM

RAM is a a short form for Random Access Memory, and it is actually an intrinsic part of the computer, as it stores information in itself that is required to be used frequently by the computer. If at all the CPU had to access the hard drive again and again to retrieve the pertinent data then it would make the computer very slow as hard disk would be catering to constant needs of CPU, thereby holding back or slowing down the other functionalities all together. RAM is very important for the effective functioning of applications in the computer.

However, it holds more importance for some than others. For example processes like video encoding and database applications require huge quantities of RAM as they are RAM intensive packages, however applications like internet surfing, MS word assignments and PowerPoint presentations are not very heavy on memory requirements. Therefore before one narrows down his requirements to upgrading RAM in the system it is mandatory to analyse the end utility for your system and thereby plan in accordance to your needs. If you think that you need RAM for extensive functions like 3D animations etc then you should invest in the same however otherwise one should hold back the unnecessary expenditure.

While deciding in purchasing RAM there are many things to be considered; first of all the kind of RAM that you need, like maybe DDR or DDR2 Ram and then the capacity; which depends on your utility. For example DDR2 256MB RAM is sufficient for regular and simple work. You can invest more in bigger capacities depending in your end utility. Also depending on the motherboard, you have to check on the available option for your computer, as Intel motherboards support DDR2 RAM whereas AMD support DDR types only. Therefore there are a lots of factors that need due consideration before the purchase is made, and it is also important to spend time on this as it is an essential aspect of efficient working on computer.

Technology has become a part of our lives; in cell phones, TV’s, vehicles and not to miss computers. Computers have become a part of our daily lifestyle. Technology has always lead way for fast and better competition. It is technology which never stops running as by the time one product is made available in the market scientists are already working of its more faster and efficient version. Computer Memory has always been associated with Random Access Memory aka RAM.
It is due to the advancement of technology that a wide variety of computer memory products are available in the market some on which may include:
Computer Memory Modules: Dynamic Random Access Memory Modules-DDR I,II and III offering 128 MB to GB RAM.
Flash USB Pen Drive: Portable storage device offering 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB capacity.
Memory Cards:Compact flash cards, secure digital high-capacity cards, gaming cards, multimedia cards, video cards and secure digital cards.
Industrial ICs/Chips:SDRAM chips with 64MB, 128 MB, 256 MB and 512 MB in different sizes.

How to Choose a Computer RAM

Which type of computer RAMs to buy? What is the speed of computer RAM that we are purchasing? How much memory is sufficient? Where can we find a reputed retailer? – These are a few questions that we often ask to get a better performance from our PC. Undoubtedly, bigger memory size of any RAM results into more data storage. One can easily notice the difference in speed & efficiency after upgrading RAM from 128MB to 256MB or 512MB to 1GB or 1GB to 2GB. But while choosing a computer RAM, we should be aware of some basic facts about this sensitive part of our computer.
Computer RAM or Random Access Memory is one such crucial part that provides a temporary data storage. For general use, we can choose from a wide range of SDRAMs & DDR RAMs. SDRAM, usually compatible with Pentium 2 or Pentium 3 processor systems, is rapidly becoming obsolete. With advanced technology, the computers today are manufactured with a high compatibility factor towards DDR RAM or DDR2 RAM. To add to the list, DDR3 RAM is the recent invention that takes the computer efficiency to another higher level.
Another interesting thing is dual channel that you will come across while going through the computer RAM manual guide. This is one such added feature in almost all the present-day computers which lets us utilize the bandwidth of two memory modules at the same time to serve the purpose of upgrading computer. This means, if you are using a 512MB RAM in your computer and you wish to upgrade it to 1GB. In that case, if you buy a 1GB RAM – your 512MB RAM will be of no use. So instead of going for a 1GB module, you can buy another 512MB RAM and install it with the older one. This way, you can get your system upgraded to double RAM at a lower price without wasting your old RAM. Same technique can be done while upgrading the computer from 1GB RAM to 2GB RAM or even more.
Next, you should know about your usage capacity. If you are a person with soft skills, there would be no use of 2GB, 3GB or 4GB RAMs for you. Higher RAM modules are not required unless you spend a lot of time while playing games or editing music or videos. To serve the purpose, the standard versions of Windows XP & Vista recognize RAMs only up to 3GB. Some of the RAM modules, recommended for better use of operating system, are listed as:
  • Windows 98 / Windows Me: 256MB to 512MB RAM
  • Windows 2000 / Windows XP: 1GB to 4GB RAM
  • Windows Vista / Windows 7 32-bit: 2GB to 4GB RAM
  • Windows Vista / Windows 7 64-bit: 6GB to 16GB RAM
  • Linux with 32-bit: 1GB to 4GB RAM
  • Linux with 64-bit: 4GB to 16GB RAM
Therefore, it is advised to go through the manual of computer first before purchasing an additional RAM to upgrade your PC. Obviously, there would be no use of additional higher RAM if your system’s motherboard belongs to an old version & it is not compatible with the type of RAM you have purchased.

Motherboard And Computer RAM Should Be Compatible With Each Other

RAM, the easiest computer component that can be replaced and installed and enhance the speed of the computer. Computer system stores temporary informations in the RAM and uses its data frequently to run the applications smoothly.
AUM computer RAM
It is always a very good idea to upgrade the computer RAM rather than allowing the system to swap and store the data in the hard disk. Swapping will hamper the performance of the system as computer cannot access the data of the hard drive as fast as it does in RAM. But before upgrading the RAM of the computer, it is always advisable to check compatibility of motherboard and also the requirement of the user as well as system (number of RAM that can be used).

It is important to know the compatibility of motherboard, the system will not boot unless the RAM is compatible with the motherboard. Compatible of motherboard can be checked through various ways like; online websites of RAM supplier, motherboard company's instruction manual, checking old computer RAM that was being used earlier. Beside, computer RAM should be install with the help of some expert, unless the RAM is fixed in proper way it will not work.
