How to Install SODIMM RAM-An Overview

Bookmark and Share
SODIMM RAM Memory stands for Small Outline DIMM, which is generally a tinier version of DIMM; that is used in Laptop computers. As against the normal DIMM RAM; that has 168 pins and supports 64 bit transfer rate, the Sodimm has 72 pins and supports only 32 bit of transfer. It is an intrinsic part of laptops and it requires little effort in installing the same in your computer; provided you have the access panel to the memory. Though this kind of panel is available in most of the computers, but some come without it as well. In case yours belong to the latter category then you would have to avail the services of a technician, otherwise the users’ step by step guide below can help you to install your own Sodimm RAM.
  • Switch off the computer and all the peripherals that are attached to it, be it the printer, scanner, fax or photocopier, and then ground yourself; in order to prevent yourself from any shocks that can impact you.
  • Each laptop is designed differently. Therefore you need to consult your computer manual to open the slots of Sodimm memory. Generally these are located either under the keyboards or under the back access panel. Depending on your laptop design you have to locate yours and open them accordingly.
  • You can unscrew the panel and keep the screws safe. Some notebooks have individual Sodimm slot and others come in pairs. If all the existing Sodimm slots are full then you have to remove the older modules to install the new one.
  • In order to install the newer modules, you have to consider the fact that if you have two or more empty slots then you have to fill in the lowest numbered slot first. You can line up metal pins with the key insertion of Sodimm slots in the motherboard. After aligning the memory module with the slots, you can gently insert the module at an angle of 45 degrees. Once all the clamps are in you can gently rotate the modules to further lock them.
  • The memory slots can be checked after turning on the systems and letting the system detect new RAM or you may also have to go into BIOS to do the needful. The panel can be screwed back after memory has been successfully detected.
