How much RAM is ‘Too’ much RAM for your Computer

Bookmark and Share
RAM is a fundamental part of the computer operating system. It may not be possible to run a system effectively if it is running low on RAM. But the primary concern of all the people is as to how much RAM would be adequate for their system, which may or may not be possible for people to determine. Therefore expert guidance is necessary to determine this.
RAM is a very significant part of any laptop, and it is also a common notion whereby it is known that if you feel that the computer is running slow then there is a need to upgrade RAM in your system. 1GB RAM memory manufacturer advocates the fact that the more memory you have in your system, the better it is to increase the efficiency of the notebooks. Laptops usually come with 512 MB of RAM; and you have the option to upgrade the same to either 1GB or 2GB RAM. As time goes by most of the computer manufacturers are making the computers in 1GB RAM only. Though upgrades more than 2GB seem to be a little impossible as there is a limitation with the motherboards as such. Though it is always better that there are computers that are made in a manner that they are more acceptable to increased RAM as such. With time evolution this would slowly be possible to be done.
However the much disputed argument is as to how much RAM is required in the system? Some people feel that the more RAM there is in the PC the better it is for effective running of the system. However, it has to be borne in mind that there is certain limitation in computer that does not allow for the increase in the speed of the computer beyond a certain point. Therefore if you upgrade your system from 128 MB to 256 MB, then the speed and the performance of the system would double up...undoubtedly! However in case you keep on increasing the RAM by two to three times, that does not mean that there is going to be a threefold increase in the performance of the system. There would definitely be a difference but not in the same proportion as the RAM has been increased.
That shows that unnecessary increase in RAM leads to the system’s performance reaching a plateau whereby not much would change after a point. The real change in the attributes can be noticed initially in the fact that you are able to make the switch between various applications very quickly and also it is possible and easy to open many applications at the same time, which may not be possible with a low RAM built in system. Therefore you should not blindly follow what the RAM manufacturers tell you about the upgrades, you should adequately weigh the pros and cons of the upgrade and then evaluate your utility before going in for system up gradation. Unnecessary system enhancements would not be able to do you any good at all; the only people gaining from these would be the RAM suppliers, therefore it should be adequately monitored unless you want to do some charity for them!
